Micellar water is the cleanser that looks like water and behaves like a magnet. Here is how it actually works, whether it is good for your face every day, and where it falls short.
How micellar water works
Micelles are tiny clusters of surfactant molecules suspended in water. One end of each molecule loves water, the other loves oil. When you sweep micellar water over your skin, the oil-loving ends grab makeup, sebum and pollution and hold them inside the micelle, so you lift them off with the cotton pad – no rubbing, no rinsing.
Is micellar water good for your face?
Yes – if the formula is right. The problems people associate with micellar water (tightness, stinging eyes, breakouts) usually come from two ingredients: alcohol and added fragrance. A micellar water without them, like our Micellar Cleansing Water (99% natural origin, with hyaluronic acid, aloe, linden flower and chamomile), can be used morning and evening, on sensitive skin, and around the eyes.
How to use it
- Soak a cotton pad.
- Sweep over face and neck. For eyes, hold the pad on the closed lid for a few seconds, then draw outward.
- Repeat until the pad comes away clean. No rinsing needed.
When micellar water isn't enough
Micellar water removes light makeup, sebum and daily grime. It does not fully remove waterproof mascara, long-wear foundation or mineral sunscreen. On those days, follow with a gentle cleanser – our Cleansing Foam or the Oil-to-Milk Cleanser. This is "double cleansing" and it is the single biggest upgrade most routines can make.
Do you need to rinse micellar water?
Not if it is alcohol- and fragrance-free and uses mild surfactants. If your current micellar water leaves a film or a tight feeling, rinse – and consider switching.
