Kojic acid is one of the few over-the-counter ingredients with real evidence behind it for fading hyperpigmentation. Here is how it works and how to use it without irritating your skin.
What kojic acid is
Kojic acid is a natural compound produced during fermentation (it was first isolated from koji, the mould used to make sake). In skincare it inhibits tyrosinase – the enzyme skin uses to produce melanin. Less melanin production means existing dark spots fade and new ones form more slowly.
What it helps with
- Sun spots and age spots
- Post-acne marks (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation)
- Uneven skin tone on face, neck, décolleté
- Darker elbows, knees and underarms (body use)
Kojic acid vs vitamin C
Both brighten, but differently. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that protects and evens tone gradually; kojic acid directly slows pigment production. They work well together – vitamin C in the morning, kojic acid in the evening. Our Targeted Dark Spot Serum combines a low, well-tolerated dose of kojic acid with vitamin C, rosemary extract and hydrating betaine.
How to use kojic acid
- Evening, on clean, dry skin: apply the serum to spots or thinly over the whole face.
- Follow with the Dark Spot Face Cream with Kojic Acid for hydration and a second, gentler dose.
- Once or twice a week, use the Kojic Acid Exfoliator to remove pigmented dead cells and improve absorption.
- Every morning, without exception: SPF 30+. Without sunscreen, pigmentation returns faster than any serum can fade it.
How long it takes
First visible fading after 4–6 weeks, clearer results at 12 weeks. Deep pigmentation such as melasma takes longer and benefits from a dermatologist's guidance.
Is kojic acid safe?
At cosmetic concentrations, yes. If redness appears, reduce to every other evening. Avoid combining with glycolic acid on the same evening during the first two weeks.
